CURRENT MOON
The Moon is eternally fascinating to us has it's own myths, legends and romance......did you know......?
- The second full moon occurring within a calendar month is called a Blue Moon - this happens about every three years - hence 'once in a Blue Moon'
- The world's tidal ranges are at their maximum during the full moon when the sun, earth and moon are in line. Sailors know this as the spring tide - spring as in a leap in water levels
- The full moon may appear round, but is actually shaped like an egg with the pointed end facing earth
- A full Moon is considered unlucky if it occurs on a Sunday but lucky on Monday or 'moon day'
- The Moon is currently moving away from the Earth at the very slow rate of 3.8 cm per year. It has been moving away from the Earth ever since its formation more than 4 billion years ago, so in ancient skies would have appeared much bigger
- We only ever see one side of the Moon - the other is mysteriously referred to as the 'dark side of the Moon'. Man first saw the dark side in 1959 thanks to a Russian spacecraft
